Homemade Butter Cookies

A classic Christmas cookie with a buttery flavor Santa loves. These tender cookies melt in your mouth.

Materials

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. almond extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350° and have 2 cookie sheets (ungreased) on standby.
  • In a large bowl, cream together butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy.
  • Add egg, vanilla, and almond. Scrape sides of bowl as necessary.
  • Add flour and beat until combined. Optional: add festive food color (such as red or green).
  • Pack dough into cookie press, or add dough to a piping bag fitted with a large open star tip (such as a Wilton's 1M, or an Ateco 826 or 827).
  • Pipe dough into rounds or press cookies onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes, or until lightly golden on bottoms and edges.
  • Allow to cool on baking sheet a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to completely cool. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

Cookies made using a cookie press results in a higher quantity of cookies, as much as 6 dozen.
For chocolate variation, mix in 1 oz. melted and cooled unsweetened chocolate.
