Materials

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/3 cup milk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450°. Grease a baking sheet.
  • In medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, parmesan cheese, sugar, garlic powder, cream of tartar, and salt.
  • Cut butter into flour mixture with two knives or a pastry blender. (See note below.)
  • Add cheddar cheese, and stir.
  • Add milk and mix until it becomes soft dough.
  • Knead on a lightly floured surface until dough becomes smooth. Shape into a 6-inch square. Cut into 9 squares and place on baking sheet.
  • Bake for approx. 12 minutes, should be golden brown. Enjoy!

Notes

A tip for cutting in butter: place butter in freezer for approx. 15-20 minutes. Grate directly into bowl in batches, stirring between batches. For this recipe, I marked the 1/4 cup line (or half way mark on the stick of butter) and grated until half was in the bowl. I did this so I had something to hold onto as I was grating, thereby keeping my fingers safe. I put the rest back in the refrigerator.
