Chocolate Cutout Cookies
These Chocolate Cutout Cookies melt in your mouth and the dough is perfect for cookie cutters. They’re easy to make with few ingredients, plus they’re festive year round, or for no reason at all. After all, making cookies for no reason certainly taste the best.
I love serving these cookies, because of the reaction I see on happy faces when they bite into one.
The cookie itself melts in your mouth with a delicious chocolate flavor. They’re fun to decorate with dips, sprinkles, or frosting. Throw in some drizzle.
Make them for your next celebration (or for no reason at all) and have fun with shapes and colors.
Making Chocolate Cutout Cookies
In a large bowl, mix the butter, sugar, and vanilla until light and fluffy.
Meanwhile, mix together the dry ingredients (flour and cocoa) in a small bowl.
Then, gradually add the dry ingredients to the large bowl.
Roll out the cookie dough on a lightly floured surface.
I like to use parchment or wax paper, a long enough piece to fold over the top.
Lightly flour it, set the dough on one half of the paper, then fold the paper over the top.
Roll the dough to about 1/4″ thickness. I think mine were a little thinner, but not a big deal.
Cut with cookie cutters and place cookies approx. 2″ apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake in a preheated oven set at 375° for 9 – 11 minutes.
Allow cookies to cool on a wired rack.
Dipping cookies:
Melt the white or vanilla chips and shortening per package directions. Each brand is a little different.
Melt them in a microwavable bowl that is deep enough for the cookie to be dipped in.
In other words, you can’t dip a cookie into a shallow plate. The smaller the bowl, the deeper the melted chips will be.
Stir the melted chips until you are sure each one is melted. It should be perfectly smooth with no lumps.
Dip the cookie into the melted chips, then place cookie on wire rack or waxed paper.
Cookie Drizzle:
Melt the chocolate chips and shortening per package directions for melting.
Again, stir until no lumps remain.
Drizzle off end of spoon or fork, or you can pour into zip lock baggie and cut tiny corner off.
Tips and Alternatives:
You can also dip cookies in melted chocolate, then drizzle with colored Candy Melts.
The combinations are endless.
When dipping cookies, gently drag bottom of cookie over side of bowl to remove excess. This way the excess gets used again, because it would have dripped off anyway. Don’t scrape the bottom or you’ll get crumbs in the white candy.
Instead of using baking chips, you can also dip cookies into melted Candy Melts, which come in colors.
Decorate with sprinkles of all colors for whatever the occasion is (i.e. Christmas, birthdays, Easter, 4th of July, etc.).
To get approx. 30 cookies, use a 3″ cookie cutter. Larger and smaller cookie cutters can be used, but the number of cookies will vary.
