Chicken Dog Treats

What a great way to show your fur-babies that you love them; giving them these homemade Chicken Dog Treats. They’re so easy to make with simple ingredients like cooked chicken, sweet potatoes, and whole wheat flour, plus dogs love them.

Chicken Dog Treats are flavored with cooked chicken and sweet potatoes, which dogs love.

This easy recipe has only five ingredients, and that’s including water. They’re also easy to shape into Chicken McNugget look-a likes, or as Kimberly would say, Cluck Nugs.

Make the whole five-dozen on one 11 x 17″ cookie sheet for ease, and you can be done in one hour. Then the fun begins.

Making Chicken Dog Treats

In a food processor, add your chopped, cooked chicken, the cooked sweet potato, water, and eggs. Pulse a few times to mix this concoction together.

Alternatively, you can use an immersion blender or regular blender so long as the chicken is reduced to mush, basically.

Then, pour this mixture into a large bowl and add about half the flour. Mix thoroughly.

You still have to mix in the rest of the flour, but it’s best to do it in batches to avoid dry pockets.

In fact, when the dough becomes too thick to stir easily, I end up dumping the dough onto a flat surface and kneading the rest of the flour into the mix. It’s easier than trying to stir it with a wooden spoon.

Ok then, time to bake the Cluck Nugs. LOL

Chicken Dog Treats that resemble McNuggets are perfect for training and rewarding.

If you happen to have an 11 x 17″ cookie sheet, the whole batch fits perfectly. Alternatively, you’ll can bake them in batches.

Lay a piece of parchment paper down, then start balling the dough.

Shaping the Dough

Take about a tablespoon, or small cookie scoop, of dough and ball it in your lightly floured hands. Place each ball on the sheet and press down slightly, then keep going.

They don’t spread when they bake, so each treat can be placed close to the next one.

I gave some of them a triangle shape, some more like a kidney, then pressed down. It’s not like Charlie knows what a McDonald’s Chicken McNugget looks like, but I do, and that makes it more fun for me.

Charlie just wants to eat them.

You can also roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface 1/3 – 1/2″ thick, then use cookie cutters. If you roll the dough out thin, you may need to reduce the bake time.

When they’re all rolled out, bake them in a preheated oven set at 400° for 15 – 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Let them cool completely, of course, then store them in the refrigerator. They also freeze well.

They’re also fun to share with friends who love their dogs, too. I sent some home for Brieutus, who gobbled his up. His fur-mama wasn’t even sure he tasted them.

Easy to make with just a few ingredients. My dog loved these so much. He never even tasted them, just gobbled them down. I like knowing that all of the ingredients are fresh and wholesome. I’m never sure about the treats from the store. Plus these turned out soft and looked fresh, not brittle like
store-bought. Brieutus said these chicken treats are a winner!!!

    1. Perfect, so glad Brieutus liked them. I have to agree with you about knowing what is going into the treats we give our pets — fresh and safe; especially if you know your pet has any allergies. Thanks to you both.

Puppies love this treat but so do older dogs. Good for dogs with sensitive tummies as these are simple wholesome ingredients that are easy to find anytime of the year. I made chicken and sweet potatoes for dinner and saved some to make this for my puppies – win, win situation.

    Our three dogs loved these.
I had extra cooked chicken, so I made a few batches with slight variations.
The first one, I followed the directions, but substituted real pumpkin for the sweet potatoes. The looked like chicken Mc Nuggets.
The second batch I added Shredded Colby/Jack cheese on top and cooked it like a sheet cake and cut it into smaller bites for the older dog and training treats for the other two.
The third pumpkin/chicken batch I added the shredded cheese and more flour to the mixture. I rolled small smalls and then rolled them in the shredded cheese then backed.

    1. Hi Joli, you can make it with all-purpose, spelt flour, rice flour, rye flour, quinoa flour, amaranth flour, or coconut flour. I use the whole wheat because it’s higher in fiber than the alternatives, but the others will work, too. One other thing, using the other flours can change the texture slightly, but I doubt your fur-baby will mind…our secret.
