Easy Pizza Rolls
Make these Easy Pizza Rolls as an appetizer, snack, or for your main meal. They’re perfect on Game Day and/or when you don’t want to spend a lot of time cooking. Additionally, they’re fun to customize with your favorite toppings, or “stuffings” in this case. (Yep, another new word.)
Each roll of crescents makes four pizza rolls, so this recipe is easy to double and triple. The crescent dough comes out flaky and delicious.
Then, not everybody agrees on stuffings, so each pizza roll can be different.
As appetizers, you can slice them in half and serve with warm Homemade Marinara Sauce, and/or Buttermilk Ranch Dressing.
As your main meal, I’d still go with the sauces, but add this delicious Italian Pasta and Lettuce Salad. If you’re lucky, you’ll have leftovers for tomorrow.
Making Easy Pizza Rolls
The Crust and Sauce
First, unroll your crescent dough, which will be your crust. You’ll see all the triangles, but we’ll fix that.
Cut along the lines into four even rectangles, then pinch together the dotted seam running diagonally on each rectangle. You need to seal those seams so your pizza sauce won’t drip out.
Spread the pizza sauce across each rectangle, but within 1/4″ of the edges. This is so that when you roll it up, it doesn’t squirt out the sides. I used a heaping tablespoon on each pizza roll, but I love sauce.
Ok, next, let’s add some toppings.
Pizza Toppings
Or stuffings, as I like to call them since they’re stuffed inside. Load the stuffings on the bottom half, which makes it easier to roll up away from you.
Pepperoni slices work perfectly here, because they roll up nicely; so do thinly sliced bell peppers and black olive slices. (Today’s lunch.)
You can easily add basil leaves, thinly sliced onion, mushroom slices, salami slices, etc. You get the picture.
What I wouldn’t use here is thick ham or chunky pineapple. Let’s be honest, pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza, but if you have to put pineapple in yours, slice or dice them thinly, same with ham or sausage.
Also, I love tomatoes, but you should probably dice them up before adding.
Ok, moving on to the cheesy part.
Pizza Cheese
I bought some pre-shredded pizza cheese, because I was feeling lazy.
I mention often in my recipes that if you want your cheese stringy and gooey, you should shred your own cheese. Purchased shredded cheese has a starch additive that keeps the cheese from sticking together, plus it stops it from being stringy and gooey. So, there’s that.
The most traditional and common cheese used on pizza is mozzarella, because of it’s moisture content, taste, and it’s melts beautifully.
That’s not to say you have to use it, or can’t use other cheeses.
Domino’s Pizza uses mozzarella with white cheddar, and other pizzerias use a mixture of mozzarella with provolone, gouda, parmesan, and so on, but this is suppose to be “easy.”
I kept my cheeses down to only two; mozzarella and parmesan. Yummy!
Next, sprinkle some Italian seasoning on top, then let’s roll these babies up.
Start at the end with all the stuffings. As you roll, some of the stuffings may try to pop out; just shove them back in place.
Once rolled, pinch the seam to seal the roll, then place on a greased sheet seam-side down. Brush some garlic butter over the top, then a splash of parmesan cheese. You can also sprinkle more mozzarella on, but the parmesan has more flavor.
Bake in a preheated oven set at 375° for 15 – 18 minutes, or until deep golden brown. This makes the outside crust nice and flaky. Serve warm with or without dipping sauces. Seriously good by themselves.
